I'm pretty excited about Elsie & Rachel's Project ReStyle going on this year. I participated by making this men's western shirt into a nice summer skirt for myself. It might look a little wonky on the dressform, but that's because I had to pin it to fit that teeny frame. I can't wait to wear it with my newly found Victorian corset cover (with a slip underneath, of course.)!
The process of the transformation was as easy as chopping off the top of the shirt, and taking in the sides of the shirt a little at the top. Last, I added a strip of fabric from the sleeves to the top, adding a button enclosure. I'm not very good at button holes, but I suppose it doesn't matter because it'll just be covered up by a belt. :)
wow. are you serious? this is crazy!
so neat. I'm bookmarking and emailing this link, trust me. I want a mens-shirt-gone skirt!
thank you for sharing!

Thanks everyone! I don't have "during" photos, but maybe I will do a quick tutorial next time I do this. If I find a bigger men's shirt, I will definitely make an elastic waist because it's easier.
And Liz, I found the top at an antique mall. It's a Victorian corset cover, and I've been keeping my eyes open for one that would fit me, for quite some time! I will have to keep and eye out once again for some smaller ones to put in the shop. :)

This is *so* lovely, Mandi! I have a plaid shirt in my closet with the sunniest of summer colors on it, and it's a tad too big, and I've meant to make it into a skirt, but haven't yet - you've inspired me! :)
Posted by: Michelle Clement | February 09, 2011 at 04:07 PM
ahh, how did you do this?? I have a 3XL heavy linen shirt I got from a thrift store (amazing pattern) that would make a great skirt, but I can't figure out how to do it!

Could you maybe even turn the arms inside out for pockets? I'm going to try this at the shop this afternoon Mandi - thanks for the inspo. This is a perfect spring diy.

I love it!
The mister just cleared out a bag of his shirts for me to craft when we moved house.. I was at a bit of a loss as to what to do with them all, I want to turn one or two into dresses, but hadn't even thought to make one into a skirt!
Will definitely give this a try!
Thanks!!
