Wooden Mini Album Cover Tutorial #3

This is the last of the cover tutorials for the wooden mini albums, which are available in The Housewife Kit.  I hope these have been some help to you!

Here's what you might need:
-Wooden Mini Album Cover
- Letter Stickers
- Decorative rub ons
- Sylus
- Slick Writer or Sharpie

_MG_5460

Step One:

Select a decorative rub on that will run the width of your album cover.  Then, carefully cut it in half.

_MG_5461

Step Two:

Place the last word of your title, using the letter stickers you have chosen, aligned with the bottom right of your book.  Then, align half of the rub on next to it, running all the way to the bottom edge of the cover.  Then, place the other half at the top of your cover, running all the way across the book.  The last part of this step is simply rubbing them onto your wooden cover, making sure each little detail has been adhered.

_MG_5462

Now that you have your cover looking beautiful, there is one part left!  The rest of your title.

Step Three:

Using your slick writer or fine sharpie, fill in the rest of the space above your letter stickers with the beginning part of your title.  I like to write my word in the air above the book first, just to make sure it will fit.  Sort of a trial run.  Then, I lower my pen to touch the book and scribble away!

That's all there is to it.  Very simple design, but a nice intro to a lovely book, wouldn't you say?

Wooden Album Cover Tutorial #2

Buttons 1

This tutorial is all about using photos and buttons to adorn the cover of your wooden mini album.  Here's what you might need:

- Wooden Mini Album Cover
- White Spray Paint
- One small photo
- Various sizes of buttons
- Strong liquid glue
- Rub on letters (optional)

BUTTONS2

Step One:

Spray a fair amount of white paint in a circle, keeping the nozzel of the bottle close to your cover, to prevent overspray.

BUTTONS3

Step Two:

Pick up the cover and move tilt it around, causing the paint to run in various patterns.  The runs needn't be precise, as for the most part they will be covered in buttons.

BUTTONS4

Step Three:

Adhere your photo to the center of the paint, and surround it with the largest of the buttons you have chosen for the cover.

BUTTONS5

Step Four:

Fill in the gaps with smaller buttons.  Once everything has dried, you may chose to rub on the letters for your title, over top of the cover photo.  In the end, I decided it would be too busy for this particular photo, but it might work well with a photo you might chose to use.

On Friday I will post the last of the wooden album cover tutorials.  I hope these ideas have been helpful to you so far!

Wooden Album Cover Tutorial #1

I have three mini tutorials to share with you this week about designing the cover of your wooden mini book.

Spray cover

For this version, you will need:
- wooden album cover
- white spray paint
- stencils
- masking tape
- Hambly frame rub ons
- stylus
- slick writer or sharpie
- rhinestone embellihsments

Spray cover2

Step One:

Arrange stencils across the cover of your book and secure with masking tape.

Spray cover3

Step Two:

Lightly spray over stencils.  Don't spray too liberally, or the paint will spread underneath the stencils, which is exactly where you don't want it to go.  You may need to do multiple coats of paint.

Spray cover4

Step Three:

After paint has dried, trim out your rub ons and lay them upside down, so that you can arrange them on the cover without them sticking.  Once you have decided which ones to use and where to place them, flip over the rub on and adhere to your cover by using a stylus.

Spray cover5

Step Four:

Inside one of the frames, write the rest of your title with a Slick Writer (from American Crafts) or a Sharpie.  The date of my event will be written inside of the bottom frame.  Lastly, embellish with little rhinestones or other tiny embellishments.

That's all there is to it!  One option for decorating the cover of a mini album.  This look can be done with different sizes of stencils, colors of paints and rub ons, and with a chipboard book instead of a wooden one.  I happen to particularly like the look of paint over top of a stained wooden album.

Come back later this week for more ideas on decorating your mini album covers!

A Personal Mini Album

Book-cover

Whenever I post about mini album making, a lot of readers express their intimidation of the process. It's so sad to hear, because I think they're so enjoyable! Not only are they so much fun to make, but they can be an extremely inexpensive project as well. This post is all about making a simple mini album and letting go of the intimidation.

Book-supplies

Here's what you might need:
1. Carboard from an empty cereal box
(can be sprayed to achieve archival quality)
2. Magazine clippings from vintage magazines or favorite catologs
3. A collection of interesting paper clippings and scraps
4. Sewing machine with various colors of thread
5. Embroidery needle and thread
6. Adhesive (I prefer archival quality rubber cement)
7. Gesso
8. Various colors of acrylic paint
9. Medium sized artist’s paint brush
10. Black and white Unibal gel pens
11. Letter/font stamps and black ink pad

Book-creating-a-cover

I prefer to create the covers of my journals before I begin the designing on the inside. This is because I like to pick colors from the cover to repeat throughout the entire book. Also, the cover really sets the tone for the style of the whole book. I made mine with scrap cardboard from a cereal box which I covered in gesso. I then chose a picture from a catalog (Free People), cropped it, adhered it (with rubber cement), and blended it into the gesso background (with more gesso).  The finishing touches were splattering some watered down acrylic paint and cutting and stitching a window for the title, which is actually on the first page of the inside. When stitching the binding for your journal or mini book, make sure the cover folds over on the inside so that you have a place to hide your securing stitches.
Book-creating-the-cover2

I actually learned how to stitch a binding by watching videos on Youtube. It’s quite simple, but a little trial and error was how I learned. Once the pages and the covers were stitched, I chose to cover the folded inside of the cover with a graphic houndstooth paper. This is probably the cleanest part of the whole book!

Book-building-a-canvas
Beginning a mini book or art journal can be quite intimidating, I know- I've been there!  (And I still hang out there sometimes). I like to start with blank spreads of kraft paper or cardboard which serve as the background. Depending on how bulky your pages are, you may want to stack only three spreads for each stitched section, if you are planning to sew the book together at their centerfolds. Seeing all the empty pages is the scary part, but the great thing about messy journals is that there are no rules. I just throw down pieces of paper chosen for their interesting patterns, photography, or textures.

Most of the paper you use should be simple enough to write on. Other papers with busy designs can be stapled, taped, sewn, or glued down as accent pieces.  You can also gesso over them to leave some pattern showing through while also allowing a nice background for journaling.  Sometimes I just spray paint over a stencil or pieces or lace to create a nice effect over just plain kraft paper or cardboard. The key to creating a visually interesting journal is layering textures of paint, paper, and anything you can dream up

After piling and pasting the spreads of your journal, it’s time to stitch together each stack. You can do this stitching process before designing the pages if it helps you understand how the book will come together in the end. At this point, I’ve been known to let the journal sit empty for a bit before adding more content and design. Every once in a while, I will journal in it immediately, but usualy I prefer adding to the journal depending on my mood. It’s really a lot like concocting a tasty soup. Sometimes the flavors have to simmer for a while.

Book-adding-the-details

It’s always exciting to see your book bound, but it’s really not complete until you’ve added lots of personal embellishments. Handwriting is wonderful, but I also love the look of the typwriter. Typing in a journal requires too much planning for my sloppy style, so I utilize a letter or font stamp. I did this throughout my book, but the primary spot was the title page which shows through to the front cover of the journal.

Magazine clippings can be instruments of journaling as well as design. Sometimes they can set the theme for a page, or even serve as the main feature of a page.  I keep a box of magazine clippings that I add to each time I purge my magazine stash.

For this particular journal, I wanted to include photos of those who have influenced my life. Old photos are great, but I would never glue them down to any of my scrapbooks. So instead of gluing them, I thought it would be safe as well as interesting to attach them to the page with paperclips. This method also allows for extra journaling which can hide behind the photos.

Hiding journaling is a fun design technique that I love to use in my journals. It adds a whole new interactive dimension to the book, but also it adds extra room for important thoughts.

There are so many way to personalize a journal. I love hunting for things and using objects that wouldn’t normally be found in a journal, like fabric or steel mesh. Whenever I finish a journal or mini book, I’m amazed at how it developed along the way.

Book-adding-details2

I hope this little tutorial has been helpful and inspiring to you!  Next week I will be posting three different tutorials on decorating the covers of wooden mini books.

A Roadtrip Mini Book

Road-trip

It's no secret that I like to make little mini books full of pictures and memories.  This little book was extra special to make, because it's all about my trip to Tennessee to visit my fellow paper crafty friends.

I used my stash of vintage papers, wallpaper, buttons, fabric, and ephemera to build the pages.  I also used some Jenni Bowlin rub ons and American Crafts fabric Thickers.

Roadtrip1
For the background of the next spread, I used the paper bag that held the photos I brought to the trip.  During our crafting times in Tennessee, we passed the bag around the table and used it to protect our work while spraying inks and painting things.  I thought it would be fun to include it as a part of my book about the weekend.

Road-trip2

For the cover of the book, I glued down a piece of a map (of Colorado, I figured I didn't need that state because I will probably never navigate my way around there!) and lightly brushed gesso over it.  The front of the book received a cascading trail of vintage buttons and a dymo label for the title.

Gosh, I really enjoy mini books!  You can make all kinda of secret flaps and fun pockets, and really, there are no rules.  I often make them as a way to try out ideas I have for scrapbook page layouts.  This weekend I'm going to work with one of the mini albums from the kits, during my trip to visit Vanessa!  Fun times will be had by all.

Mini album time!

It's not that I haven't been making mini albums... just haven't been sharing a lot! I have a ton going on with school and whatnot right now... and that's how it will be for the next couple of weeks. But I wanted to share a little summin summin I did with mostly Hambly products. It's also a gift for my brother... that I haven't given him yet. So, Matt, if you're reading this now... here's a gift for ya! :)

The Year of the House layouts

Hambly is having a contest right now at 2Peas... you should check it out!

The rest of the journal will be up with the rest of them in the photo album to the right. Now off to work on homework like a good girl!

skinny mini

There's a new prompt up at TAIF!!!
How can you use cardboard boxes?
When I got my chandelier from UO,
it came in this awesome cardboard box.
And I just KNEW it would someday
be a part of a mini book.
Today is that day.
Well, actually Saturday was that day.
Some SISters and I met for a crop.

Croprounded

I was totally there for the socialization.
And I had no idea what to make.
No direction whatsoever.
So I decided to do a mini.
I like making mini books, because for me,
anything goes.
I don't stick to a particular form
or grid throughout the whole book.
It's a place to try out new things,
and get the mojo flowing.
And a good time to use up scraps!
I was also able to use some fun things
from Kelly, of The Paper Pixie.

Oh and guess what?!
I got my box of Hambly on Friday.
And boy does it smell good!
You heard me!  It smells good!
I'm going to start whipping out some layouts soon!
At least, that's the plan.  :)

the endless summer

It's an annoyance
that happens each year at about this time.
Perhaps they mean it in the best way.
Perhaps they just can't think of anything else to say.
In any case, NO.  I am NOT ready for school.
But thanks for asking?
I mean come on people-
don't make it creep up on me any sooner than it must.
I still have almost a full month.
Although today I just paid my tuition in full.
And it was not a heart warming sensation.
Although I enjoyed crossing BIG ITEM off my to do list.
Another item that I enjoyed crossing off my list
wasn't any such burden...
It was this week's prompt for The Art is Found!
The prompt is about using photos as a title.
My mini album I made is called Body Shop...
the photo is one I took of a local Body Shop!
It's full of all sorts of self esteem stuff.
Personal photos of my body (all G-rated!)
and photos I took of signs around town.
I'm intrigued by Debee's work with spray paint...
so I tried it out a bit more in this book.
Here it is!

I've also been creating some stuff around the house.
But I'll share some of that later.

You're actually my first.

I hope that doesn't make this awkward for you.
Because I'm totally ready.
So here it is.
There is a new prompt up!
Annnnd a special RAK for someone who participates.
And it just so happens that the RAK
is the wood bound journal that I made for this prompt.
It's got lots of loveliness inside
-all found stuff-
and it's also got lots of room for someone special
to add lots more like photos and journaling
and heck, whatever you darn well please.
Here's the cover:

A2

but to see more, you'll have to go here.

And just because I can't get enough of this girl....
I wanted to show you some swap goodies Kara gave me,
and then the ones I gave her.
Love her style.
LOVE IT!

Okay, without further ado...

And that's all I got for today.
OH yeah, and the lovely and sweet Kayla Aimee
picked a layout for the catwalk today.
Which is awesome first of all, but second of all,
I must say how much I love that girl-
met her for the first time last weekend,
and she is just the sweetest!
And come to think of it, she might have been
at my table when I did that layout!  hmmmm....
Anyways, I missed you guys last weekend!
There'll be more sisiversary stories,
or maybe more bullet points next time.

*edit*
Teresa, if you are reading this,
those shoes are from Urban Outfitters.

And the envelope says.....

It says something you can't read....
Cause it's for Phil's eyes only! haha
Monday is our anniversary.
I think somebody told me that
on the first anniversary
you're supposed to give a paper gift????
Welll... that's right up my stinkin ally.
Or my dark ally.
But preferably my clean, well maintained ally.
Anyway, I wanted to make this post short,
all about the pics...
and here I go rambling.

Danish_walnut

The TAIF prompt is to use envelopes.
I used two.
In one mini album.
To hide all the for your eyes only's
that I put into Phil's mini album.
The mini album that was completely FOUND objects,
except for one sheet of Hambly
and the dymo tape.
All the carboard is from cereal boxes
and mac and cheese!
Oh yeah and the thread
That holds the thing together.
The cover is thin pine ply leftover from school projects,
which you will see more of, I might add!
And without further ado.....
here is the mini album of which I speak!

I hate doing scrap only posts....
So, I guess I'll tell you that tomorrow
I have the whole day off!
Not that I don't mind being there with the kids,
but I need some sleepy time,
and I suppose cleaning time. (sigh)

Phil and I are going swimming at his parents.
Can't wait! It's sposed to be in the 90s tomorrow!
Whew!
